Special Finite-difference Methods for Extremely Anisotropic Diffusion

چکیده
In fusion plasmas there is extreme anisotropy due to the high temperature and large magnetic field strength. This causes diffusive processes, heat diffusion and energy/momentum loss due to viscous friction, to effectively be aligned with the magnetic field lines. This alignment leads to different values for the respective diffusive coefficients in the magnetic field direction and in the perpendicular direction, to the extent that heat diffusion coefficients can be up to 10 12 times larger in the parallel direction than in the perpendicular direction. This anisotropy puts stringent requirements on the numerical methods used to approximate the MHD-equations since any misalignment of the grid may cause the perpendicular diffusion to be polluted by the numerical error in approximating the parallel diffusion. Currently the common approach is to apply magnetic field-aligned coordinates, an approach that automatically takes care of the directionality of the diffusive coefficients. This approach runs into problems in the case of crossing field lines, e.g., x-points and points where there is magnetic reconnection. It is therefore useful to consider numerical schemes that are more tolerant to the misalignment of the grid with the magnetic field lines, both to improve existing methods and to help open the possibility of applying regular non-aligned grids. To investigate this, several discretization schemes are applied to the unsteady anisotropic heat diffusion equation on a cartesian grid.

Mimetic finite difference methods for diffusion equations ∗
This paper reviews and extends the theory and application of mimetic finite difference methods for the solution of diffusion problems in strongly heterogeneous anisotropic materials. These difference operators satisfy the fundamental identities, conservation laws and theorems of vector and tensor calculus on nonorthogonal, nonsmooth, structured and unstructured computational grids. We provide e...

متن کاملMonotone finite difference schemes for anisotropic diffusion problems via nonnegative directional splittings∗
Nonnegative directional splittings of anisotropic diffusion operators in the divergence form are investigated. Conditions are established for nonnegative directional splittings to hold in a neighborhood of an arbitrary interior point. The result is used to construct monotone finite difference schemes for the boundary value problem of anisotropic diffusion operators. It is shown that such a mono...
متن کاملStudy of Discrete Duality Finite Volume Schemes for the Peaceman Model
In this paper, we are interested in the finite volume approximation of a system describing miscible displacement in porous media. This system is made of two coupled equations: an anisotropic diffusion equation on the pressure and a convection-diffusion-dispersion equation on the concentration of invading fluid. The anisotropic diffusion operators in both equations require a special care while d...
متن کاملAntidissipative Numerical Schemes for the Anisotropic Diffusion Operator in Problems for the Allen-cahn Equation
This contribution discusses two attitudes to artificial dissipation reduction in numerical schemes for solving initial boundary value problems for the Allen-Cahn equation with anisotropy incorporated into the diffusion operator. In the first case, a weighted first order finite difference scheme is used for spatial discretization of the anisotropic texture diffusion problem in 2D, designed for v...
